Purpose This study aims to investigate the impact of four key factors’ relationship on knowledge collaboration (KC) performance in Iran’s agricultural scientific virtual teams (VTs). Design/methodology/approach This study gathered quantitative data by administering a questionnaire to 272 members from four agricultural research institutes in Iran, who communicated through Telegram groups. WARPPLS was used to analyze the relationships among the variables. Findings The findings indicate that team and individual attributes and VT configuration significantly influence KC performance in VTs. In contrast, team emotional and intellectual intelligence (EQ/IQ) does not show a significant impact. This research contributes to the theoretical framework of KC, providing a foundation for future research. Research limitations/implications The data-gathering tool, an electronic questionnaire, has inherent limitations. Time constraints and some challenges related to employee collaboration should be acknowledged. Suggestions are made for further research considering other factors and fields of study. Practical implications Enhancing knowledge management in virtual work teams relies heavily on KC performance as a crucial criterion. Many organizations face challenges in achieving successful KC within VTs. Rapid technological advancements have made addressing this issue imperative. This study offers practical insights to address inefficiencies within VTs. Originality/value This research has a novel approach (both behavioral and technical) to evaluate critical factors influencing the KC performance in agricultural scientific VTs in Iran. It provides valuable future guidelines for managers of organizations.
