The Reception and Greek Transliterations of the Borrowed Concepts and Terms in the Scholia to the “Basilicorum Libri LX”: the Tasks of Studying and Systematization

The studying receptions and transliterations of the concepts and terms at the “Libri Basilici” and Scholia to them suits perfectly to the scientific interests of V. N. Beneshevich. This study is based on the innovative methods of the informative and analytical approach to Byzantine law. The systematization and classification of receptions and transliterations are primarily conditioned by the principles of part-speech attribution and semantic identification, taking into account the linguistic origin of the borrowing and the grammatical features of the word. The form of transcription and the context of word use are required consideration. The Scholia to the “Libri Basilici” are replete with various receptions and transliterations of concepts and terms. This is clear evidence of the development of medieval Byzantine law and the formation of social legal discourse. The Byzantine lawyers adopt methods of legal technology under the influence of linguistic and legal factors. The new verbal forms of concepts and terms reveals the peculiarities of the cognitive abilities of medieval man. The task is to display receptions and transliterations that remain outside the field of view of specialists. The results of the exploration serve to study reception of concepts and terms of Byzantine law as a whole.
