Personal essay explores a pedagogical complaint in doctoral education, suggesting a need for engagement with Latinidad.
Abstract In this Voices: Reflective Accounts of Education personal essay, José Luis Cano Jr. shares his experience of writing and delivering an open letter to his doctoral program and department to complain about the lack of engagement with Latinidad in curriculum and instruction. Cano details the process of composing this pedagogical complaint, which he frames within “pleito rhetoric” (Serna, 2017, p. xiii). The motivation for this pedagogical complaint began during his undergraduate and graduate education, and he thus incorporates these experiences as constitutive of a complaint biography. Cano concludes the essay with a call for pleito rhetoric to expand the composition of thoughts in doctoral schooling and chart paths for doctoral education.
