This work extends the iteration framework of variational operators in mathematics, suggesting broader applications.
This paper systematically extends the axiomatic framework, analytic continuation methods, semigroup theory, and categorical duality principles established in Operational Mathematics (Liu, 2025) to the continuous and complex-order iteration of the variation operator \(δ\) and the inverse variation operator \(δ⁻¹\). Variation and inverse variation form a fundamental pair of mutually inverse operations in the calculus of variations. Their higher-order iterations---higher variations \(δ^n\) and multiple inverse variations \(δ⁻ⁿ\)---are well known for natural numbers \(n\). The core contribution of this work is the extension of the iteration count \(α\) from natural numbers to integers, rationals, reals, and finally complex numbers, thereby constructing a one-parameter family of variational operators \(\{δ^α\}α\) that satisfies the semigroup property, analyticity in \(α\), and uniqueness under regularity conditions. We first establish an axiomatic foundation for variational iteration, proposing six axioms parallel to Axioms 1--6 of the original Operational Mathematics, and rigorously prove their consistency and independence. The group structure of integer-order variations is then developed, with explicit construction of inverse variations via a homotopy formula and a Poincar\'e-type uniqueness theorem. To construct fractional iteration roots, we employ both the Schr\"oder equation and Abel equation approaches, combined with the deep duality between the variation operator and the fractional derivative operator. This yields a definition of \(δp/q\) for any rational \(p/q\) and proves the semigroup property. For real orders, we introduce the Hille--Yosida theory of the variational semigroup and characterize its infinitesimal generator, establishing the variational iteration as the solution of an abstract Cauchy problem. The iteration count \(α\) is further analytically continued to the complex plane, revealing the singularity structure of complex-order variations---logarithmic branch points at negative integers, a natural boundary along the negative real axis, and a Riemann surface that serves as the universal cover. The fractional calculus of variations is fully integrated into this framework: we derive the Euler--Lagrange equations, transversality conditions, and fractional Noether's theorem for arbitrary real orders, and prove that higher-order variational equations are precisely fractional iterations of the original Euler--Lagrange equation. Treating the iteration count \(α\) as an independent variable, we establish a variational propagation equation and a fractional Hamilton--Jacobi equation. High-precision numerical algorithms based on Chebyshev spectral methods and adaptive Gauss--Jacobi quadrature are developed, with rigorous error bounds demonstrating exponential convergence, and extensive numerical verification is provided. Finally, we prove a categorical equivalence among the variational iteration category, the differential iteration category, and the additive category of numbers---a triple duality that fully incorporates variational operations into the duality principle of Operational Mathematics. Applications to fractional field theory, the renormalization group, anomalous diffusion, quantum path integrals, viscoelasticity, and optimal control are discussed, demonstrating the physical significance of the theory.
