Case report reveals guidewire incarceration complications in infants, suggesting preventative strategies are needed.
Ultrasound-guided central venous catheterization is a widely utilized technique for establishing venous access in pediatric patients. While this procedure is generally associated with various complications, mechanical issues related to the guidewire are exceedingly uncommon. We report a case of a 6-month-old boy with a knotted guidewire incarcerated in the femoral vein during ultrasound-guided central venous catheterization. The patient subsequently underwent vascular surgery to successfully remove the knotted guidewire. We thoroughly analyzed the underlying causes of guidewire incarceration in blood vessels and propose strategies to avoid such rare complications.
