Explores the impact of climate change on global security, highlighting resource challenges and potential conflicts.
Human civilization began with the stabilization and warming of the earth’s climate. A drier harsher unstable climate means that humans could neither develop agriculture or permanent settlement. Violence and disruption stemming from stresses created by abrupt climate changes may pose different types of challenges to global security. The most outstanding being food shortages, decreases in availability and quality of fresh water and disruption of access to strategic minerals locations. Military confrontation may be triggered by desperate need for energy, food and water. The actual impact would likely vary depending on the level of weather conditions, the adaptability of humanity and decisions by policy makers.
