Discussion of traffic congestion issues in Enugu and strategies for economic growth mitigation.
For many countries around the globe, economic development has contributed to increases in levels of private car ownership. This has induced traffic-related problems such as road congestion particularly in developing countries. It is evident that most cities of developing world like Enugu cannot afford nor would they desire a completely free and unencumbered travel at all hours of the day. According to OECD/ECMT (2004), an urban area completely devoid of traffic congestion at all times of the day should not be regarded as a successful city, economically speaking. This is because vibrant economic activities generate traffic problems. Fully eradicating road traffic congestion is neither an affordable, nor a feasible goal in economically dynamic urban areas. This paper, therefore, discussed the current traffic congestion problems in Enugu metropolis and recommended management strategies aimed at mitigating them
