Research explores environmental sociology's role in addressing health and sustainability in Nigeria's Niger Delta, suggesting paths for recovery.
This research paper dwelt mainly on environmental sociology and sociology of health as a motor vehicle for accelerating the quick recovery from environmental devastation, deforestation, retro gradation and progradation of the Delta in Nigeria. The aim of accomplishing sustainable development can only be satisfied if conservation through societal sensitization, environmental education on the relevant of herbs, roots and the leaves in our forest land can be safe. Hence the societal interaction with what is considered biotic i.e. living things cannot be complete in every ecosystem not until the benefit and the need for biotic factors i.e. non-living thing is recognized; this is what is considered as sharing the environmental problems, for a more symbiotic and mutual living. This study covered the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria, namely, south-south, with the following state: Bayelsa with Yenegoa as the state capital, Rivers State with Port Harcourt as the state capital, Akwa Ibom State with Uyo as the state capital, Cross River State with Calabar as the state capital, Abia State with Umuahia as the capital, Edo State with Benin city as a state capital etc. This study employed the most empirical observation and the investigation, to see and record the number of oil pipeline, seismic oil prospecting lines witnessing geophone, wire lines monthly for oil prospecting and exploration. The investigation study also covered the displaced roles of the native herbal healers, who depend on certain species of herbs for major therapeutic reasons. This was done through sample survey, which involved use of questionnaires, physical identification and intelligent interview, were also used to minimize high rise in anger and provocation of the respondents, especially those whose shrine have been damaged to enable the oil pipelines to be buried. This was tested using the chi-square (x2) test statistics, and also those whose ornamental trees and healing plants were cut down within the study area, was observed significant, and was substantiated using the coefficients of chi-squared residuals (R). Based on the findings, deforestation, soil erosion, heavy wind tornados’, Retro-gradation and progradation of the Delta is more pronounced, within the area whose land suffered pipe-line laying and seasonal burying.
