Survey assesses water access levels in Onitsha, highlighting socioeconomic disparities.
This study was undertaken to ascertain the level of implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) target 6 in the city of Onitsha, Anambra State, Nigeria using survey method. This was done through the evaluation of water situation in the study area in relation to time taken to access water, distance traveled to collect water and the quantity of water consumed per capita per day. Pertinent research questions were asked to ascertain if the different layouts were accessing water in line WHO benchmark. For example, what is the time spent to collect water at the nearest facility by the residents of the various layouts of the study area? A total of 666 respondents were surveyed using stratified random sampling technique. The result of the research question shows that the residents of the study area have good access time as 91 percent of the respondents claimed that they collect water within the WHO's recommended time of 5 to 30 minutes. Based on the findings, the study recommends that the socioeconomic disparity and inequity produced by market forces, which in turn is reinforced by government policies which favour some layouts at the expense of others should be addressed by making the state water board functional and efficient.
