Highlights strategies to improve waste management in Nigeria, indicating a path toward environmental sustainability.
Man’s living standard has been greatly improved by his advancement in science and technology. His new way of life demands for production of various chemical-based consumer products needed to improve his standard of living. The manufacturing process of these products creates hazardous wastes thus million tons of these wastes calls for safe disposal management process that is compatible with the health and environmental protection principles. Actions taken to manage waste can be achieved by encouraging material efficiency, reduction in waste generation, enabling recovery and recycling of discarded materials. These and other management processes are critical elements of sustainable environment. A need for radical change in the manufacturing process is also necessary and this can be achieved if policy makers develop strategies towards healthier production and waste disposal methods that are less harmful to the environment.
