Survey on public transportation reveals significant issues affecting attendance in southeastern Nigerian schools, suggesting urgent improvements.
One of the greatest factors affecting students and staff productivity in their endeavors is the observed poor state of public transportation in the States’ tertiary Institutions of learning in the South- East of Nigeria. A sample of one hundred respondents from each of the selected four state tertiary Institutions in the study area gave a sample size of 400. The study sought to investigate the level of public mass transportation in these Institutions. To achieve this, a null hypothesis was formulated which stated that there is no significant relationship between Lateness to work/ lectures (i.e. attendance) and Distance to school, Cost of transportation and Number of public mass transit vehicles. The result from questionnaire administration buttressed the fact that the students/ staff of these institutions suffer from lopsided or malfunctioning public transportation. A multiple Linear Regression (MLR) was used to verify whether there is any relationship or not. The result showed a strong and significant relationship between Lateness to work /lectures in the Institutions and Distance from school, Cost of transportation and Number of mass Transit Vehicles. To alleviate the negative effects on students/staff, the university Authorities and the government should come in more seriously and sustainably to alleviate their plight. The Authorities in these Institutions in association with their Students Unions, have a joint venture in purchasing the mass transit vehicles, operating and monitoring their activities, instead of allowing private operators to hold sway.
