Case report reveals mania in a schizophrenia patient following ECT treatment, suggesting vigilance is necessary.
Objective To report a clinical case of mania following the administration of ECT in a patient with schizophrenia. Method We present the case of a patient diagnosed with schizophrenia who developed an episode of mania during the treatment cycle. Informed consent was obtained. Results A 27-year-old man with a diagnosis of treatment-resistant schizophrenia and a history of multiple substance use presented for ECT. During the third session, he developed symptoms of mania characterized by expansive mood, irritability, tachypsychia, logorrhea, decreased need for sleep, increased motor activity, and impulsive behavior. Treatment with a mood stabilizer and antipsychotic was initiated, with subsequent clinical improvement leading to discharge. Conclusion The occurrence of post-ECT mania in patients with treatment-resistant schizophrenia is rare and highlights the need for close clinical surveillance for early detection of affective symptoms.
