The development of organic species with positive redox potentials in acidic and alkaline aqueous media for redox-flow battery applications has been notoriously difficult. The Research Article by D. Pakarinen, H. Lundberg and A. Khataee (DOI: 10.1002/batt.202500775) describes a new redox-active compound class for this purpose—aryl imidazols. An initial screening demonstrated that 4-(4,5-diphenyl-1H-imidazol-2-yl) phenol displays promising redox behavior in both acidic and highly alkaline media. Although the compound did not exhibit stability during battery cycling, this work indicates the potential of imidazole-based redox-active species for application in future redox flow batteries or other electrochemical energy devices, provided stability is improved.
