Study investigates machining efficiency and surface quality of aramid fiber reinforced plastic using carbide end mills, highlighting performance challenges.
Aramid fiber-reinforced plastic (AFRP) exhibits performance characteristics difficult to achieve with other composite materials due to its excellent impact resistance and wear resistance. However, AFRP faces challenges during machining due to the anisotropic nature and high toughness of aramid fibers, including severe tool wear, rough machined surfaces, and fiber delamination or pull-out. Therefore, this study investigated the machining characteristics of AFRP to clarify the current challenges in its side-cutting machining. The goal was to improve machining efficiency and surface quality using carbide end mills.
