Experimental and numerical study reveals key factors for dynamic response in a seismic context.
Liquid storage tanks are important and vital structures, which have been considered as life line of industry and service facilities. For that the design of fluid tanks to resist the seismic hazard has become included in the current design strategies. Especially, after recording a lot of severe damages and failed modes occurring during the strong ground motions. Regarding the seismic activity of Damascus region, the design of tanks to resist the seismic loads is very necessary. In this research, the properties of dynamic response were investigated for the site of sewage treatment tanks which contain several ground-supported cylindrical tanks based on sedimentary layer through experimental and numerical Study. This study aims to find the relation between the natural frequency for fluid tank system and natural frequency of soil layer through experimental work by measurement the ambient noise, using spectral analysis technique (Nakamura, 1989) and calculating the spectral ratios. In addition, dynamic response of 3D model of cylindrical tank in the study site subjected to earthquake ground motion is investigated by using finite element method (FEM). The Numerical modeling is carried out by Abaqus® software to compare the analytical frequency against the experimental one. ALE (Arbitrary Lagrange -Euler) method has used to model the interaction Between the Fluid and the tank in the model. The results show the frequency of fluid–tank system and the frequency of soil site are the main factors that control the dynamic response. Furthermore, the results exhibit that the dynamic interaction between tank and site could be anticipated for a seismic excitation with certain frequency content. Also, it is important to avoid the convergence between the frequency of Site and tanks to prevent the resonance state.in addition, to make appropriate measures before the construction work begins.
