This comprehensive review summarizes the natural history, risk prediction, and prevention of sudden cardiac death in patients with coronary artery disease or heart failure.
Why the study?
Major studies have advanced knowledge on risk prediction and prevention of sudden death in coronary artery disease or heart failure, while recognition of high-risk patients in rare or previously unknown diseases remains difficult due to lacking studies.

“For the first time these guidelines have incorporated the concept proposed by several consensus documents that DNA analysis should be a fundamental component of post mortem assessment in young sudden death victims. The molecular analysis helps to identify the presence of genetic diseases that can occur in a structurally normal heart and therefore cannot be identified during autopsy. Identification of a genetic cause as a substrate for a sudden death facilitates the early diagnosis of affected relatives and may help protect them through a personalised approach that spans from lifestyle modifications to the early use of therapies.”
“This recommendation is based on the fact that many patients with reduced ejection fraction early after a myocardial infarction will experience an improvement in their condition over time and therefore do not require the implantation of an ICD. Reassessment of ejection fraction is critical to ensure that all efforts are made to avoid unnecessary ICDs while at the same time identifying patients whose ejection fractions remain low even after medical therapy and who need an ICD.”
This ESC Task Force document provides a comprehensive review of risk prediction, evaluation, and prevention of sudden cardiac death across common and rare cardiac conditions.
This comprehensive, educational document on sudden cardiac death is an extensive review that was deemed necessary for two reasons: first, major studies have advanced our knowledge of the natural history, risk prediction and evaluation, and prevention of tachyarrhythmias and sudden death in patients with coronary artery disease or heart failure; second, in rare or previously unknown diseases, the recognition of high risk patients is more difficult since studies are either lacking or they are less likely to be performed.
