This study aims to explore the effects of unforeseen construction disturbances on pupfish health and welfare.
Conducted a case study on pupfish (Cyprinodon variegatus) exposed to construction activities.
Documented mortality rates and alterations in the acoustic environment due to construction noise.
Implemented mitigating actions to minimize negative impacts on aquatic animals.
Pupfish mortality risk was 17 times greater when exposed to construction compared to a standard laboratory environment.
Construction activities led to significant alterations in the laboratory's acoustic environment, introducing unpredictable high-frequency sounds.
The study provides recommendations for better preparation against unpredictable disturbances for aquatic laboratory animals.
