Retrospective study finds combining microneedling and minoxidil improves hair growth in women, suggesting effective management.
Objective To evaluate the efficacy and safety of combining microneedling with 5% minoxidil solution for the treatment of female pattern hair loss. Methods This retrospective study analyzed clinical data from 40 female patients with androgenetic alopecia treated at the Dermatology Department of Hefei Second People’s Hospital between January 2023 and April 2024. All patients underwent microneedling combined with topical 5% minoxidil solution, administered once weekly for 12 consecutive weeks. Posttreatment follow‐up assessments were conducted to evaluate hair growth outcomes. Results Of the 40 patients, 13 showed significant improvement, 17 showed moderate improvement, 6 showed mild improvement, and 4 showed no response, yielding an overall efficacy rate of 90% (36/40). The average increase in hair density was 17.98 ± 8.3 hairs/cm 2 . Notably, treatment efficacy correlated positively with disease severity, with more severe cases showing faster responses. However, no significant correlation was observed between efficacy and patient age. Throughout the study, no serious adverse reactions were reported. Conclusion The combination of microneedling and 5% minoxidil solution represents a safe and effective treatment modality for female pattern hair loss. This approach offers a promising therapeutic option for clinical management, with minimal adverse effects and significant hair regrowth outcomes.
