Maps contamination risk in confined aquifers, highlighting transport pathways for oil.
A methodology for probabilistic assessment and mapping of contamination risk in confined aquifers is proposed. The approach combines calculation of vertical transport times of surface-derived contaminants, geostatistical analysis of spatial correlations, and stochastic modeling of the resulting data. A pilot probabilistic contamination risk map of the Podol’sko-Myachkovskii Carboniferous aquifer was developed for the city of Moscow, reflecting potential transport of oil from the overlying Mesozoic–Cenozoic aquifer system.
