Key Points

  • Investigate historical water harvesting strategies used in the basalt desert of NE-Jordan.
  • Reviewed archaeological evidence from various periods, particularly the Neolithic era.
  • Analyzed water harvesting technologies adapted to the volcanic landscape.
  • Documented the evolution of water access methods over time.
  • Found evidence of significant human activity dating back to the Neolithic period.
  • Identified multiple water harvesting technologies tailored to local environmental conditions.
  • Demonstrated that the desert landscape was not as uninhabitable as previously thought.

Abstract

Until recently the barren volcanic landscape of the harra in NE-Jordan with its low precipitation rate has been regarded as uninhabitable. Recent archaeological research has revealed evidence of abundant human activities dating back as far as to the Neolithic period. In all times, access to water was crucial for human survival. Therefore, specific water harvesting technologies were developed and implemented, which will be presented in this paper.
