The paper is focused on the sites of Khafaja and Tell Asmar, which have been excavated extensively and enable a topographical analysis pertaining to the 3rd millennium BC. The fi rst aspect examined is the emergence and development of the layout of the sites, which appears to be different. Changes in the use of space within each town are tentatively connected with the political context of the Early Dynastic period.
