Systematic review examines benefits and risks of GLP-1 receptor agonists on pregnancy and lactation, suggesting positive maternal and fetal health effects.
Obesity and Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) are commonplace diseases that complicate a pregnancy and intervene in the healthy development of the fetus. There have been many medical and lifestyle approaches to manage those two diseases, but we have reached an impasse on successfully eliminating the additional risk that both the mother and the fetus face. Glucagon-like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonists (GLP-1RAs) are a newer class of drugs that have recently gained attention due to the benefits on the management of obesity and Diabetes. This systematic review aims to ascertain the benefits and risks of using GLP-1RAs during pregnancy and lactation. Pubmed, Scopus and Web of Science were methodically searched and screened up to 04-AUG-2025 for eligible studies. A total of 1674 records were identified, of which 14 articles met the inclusion criteria. The results suggested that GLP-1RAs may have a positive impact on the health of the mother and the baby although further research will be needed to ascertain the safety of these medications in humans.
