Archaeological Evaluation: Land East of St Edmunds Lane, Great Dunmow, Essex

Twenty-one evaluation trenches, generally measuring 30m long by 1.8m wide, were distributed across the c.2.7ha site to achieve a random sample. Trenches were mechanically excavated under direct archaeological supervision until the top of the archaeological horizon or the natural geology, which occurred at the same time. In the central part of the site, the trial-trench evaluation revealed numerous cut features of unknown or uncertain date, origin and function. It is likely that some or all the features were of geological or natural origin. A few pieces of CBM and medieval pottery were recovered from the topsoil. No securely dated archaeological remains or deposites were identified.
