Shows enhanced acid inhibition resistance in anaerobic digestion via quorum-sensing strain addition, indicating better system stability.
/L/d, whereas the control reactor underwent collapse and ceased methane production. Moreover, the QS strain addition promoted extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) synthesis, with protein and polysaccharide contents in the loosely bound EPS fraction increasing by 1.98-fold and 3.90-fold, respectively. Microbial community analysis revealed a 3.74-fold enrichment of the propionate-oxidizing genus Brooklawnia along with a 1.22-fold upregulation in the propionate oxidation pathways. Concurrently, key pathways associated with acid inhibition resistance, including proton efflux, cellular activity maintenance, and EPS production, were highly upregulated, which reinforced intracellular pH homeostasis and sustained cellular metabolic activity. Overall, QS strain addition effectively regulated microbial community structure and function, conferring significantly enhanced resistance to acid inhibition in AD systems. This study demonstrated that QS strain addition can be an effective method for mitigating acid inhibition and enhancing AD system stability.
