Systematic review synthesizes evidence on safety and effectiveness of Syzygium cumini extracts using zebrafish model, highlighting gaps in knowledge.
This systematic review, conducted following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines, synthesizes the available in vivo evidence on the toxicological safety and pharmacological potential of extracts, compounds, and nanoparticle formulations derived from Syzygium cumini (L.) Skeels evaluated in the zebrafish (Danio rerio) model. A comprehensive literature search was performed in January 2026 across four electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and ZFIN) covering studies published between 2010 and 2026. The review addresses formulation-dependent toxicity thresholds, the influence of plant part and extraction solvent on phytochemical variability and biological outcomes, developmental stage-dependent sensitivity, and the current gap between toxicological characterization and therapeutic validation of this traditionally used medicinal plant. This OSF registration serves to ensure transparency and reproducibility of the review process, including search strategies, eligibility criteria, screening records, and data extraction materials.
