Abstract

Lithium-containing intermetallic compounds, in particular tin-based systems, are attracting significant attention as potential anode materials for battery applications. In this work, we present the crystal structure of a new ternary compound, Li11Co1.8Sn20, which was solved and refined from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data: new structure type, space group C2/m, Pearson symbol mS66; a = 15.2320(5), b = 6.3334(2), c = 14.8033(4) Å, β = 99.758(4)°. The structure consists of a framework of pentagonal, square and trigonal prisms formed by Sn atoms and partially centered by Li or Co atoms.
