Framework reveals the role of knowledge levels and power dynamics in managing expertise within labour markets.
The paper reviews the concept of technical expertise and its management in terms of power and knowledge. We offer a framework for schematising the concept. We itemise differing 'knowledge levels' at which expertise may be said to operate, and discuss how those sets of knowledges may be carried by groups who themselves have greater (or lesser) power to 'define the situation' within the workplace. We consider the forms through which expertise may become economically tradeable in the labour and product markets, and conclude with a discussion of the management of expertise in the financial services sector.
