In this article, Zhou Da (周达)'s mathematical background and academic activities prior to his research trip to Japan are evaluated. The process of the spread of the Theorem in Japan, Europe and China and the academic discussions it triggered are then described in detail. By examining and analyzing existing academic views, the article affirms Zhou Da's contribution and presents the efforts of Chinese scholars in the late Qing Dynasty to integrate Chinese academic research into the world.
