This review discusses the history and innovations of the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System in China, emphasizing its development stages and strategies.
The BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) is a flagship high-tech project of independent planning, design, construction and application in China. On June 23, 2020, the last BDS satellite was successfully launched. This paper reviews the development history of satellite navigation systems in China, analyzes the decision-making background of the autonomous satellite navigation system, analyzes the characteristics reflected in the construction process of the BDS at each stage, and focuses on the formation process and innovation of the “three-step” development strategy of the BDS. After a brief introduction to the BDS construction process, the paper provides a preliminary discussion on the engineering innovation and technological innovation embodied in the development of BDS.
