Abstract Background and aims 2.5% of the Hywel Dda health board population were on the stroke register in 2024. The health board stroke prevalence was second highest for Wales and greater than the average stroke prevalence in Wales of 2.17%. Increased risk factors such as an ageing population and lifestyle factors explain this. Our study aims to describe the ischaemic stroke population in Pembrokeshire and identify the reasons behind prevalence. Methods This was a retrospective cross-sectional study with data collected from SNAPP database of patients presenting to Withybush General Hospital (WGH) between 1st January to 31st December 2024. Clinical records were used to identify patient demographics and treatment. Results The study included 219 participants. Mean age 73.7 (SD +/- 13.1, 39.7%) female. Mean NIHSS score on admission was 6.45 (SD +/- 6.35). Median MRS score pre-hospital admission was 1 (IQR 0-3). 43 participants received thrombolysis and 14 people received thrombectomy. The median duration of stay was 6 days (IQR 2-21). 184 people had at least 1 or more risk factors for ischaemic stroke. The most common risk factor was hypertension (n=167, 76.3%) followed by diabetes (n=50, 22.8%). The median time between symptom onset and hospital presentation was 518.5 minutes (IQR 136.5-1180). Conclusions This study provides an overview of ischemic stroke patients presenting to WGH in 2024. The findings demonstrate a high burden of modifiable risk factors and limited people receiving initial medical or surgical treatments for stroke. This highlights the need for community level interventions focussed on primary prevention and timely hospital presentation.
