The Impact of Accounting Disclosure of Digitalization Indicators on Financial Performance of Palestinian Banks

Aim: This study aimed to explore the nature and level of accounting disclosure concerning digitalization indicators within listed Palestinian banks. It also sought to measure the variation of such disclosure among these banks and determine its impact on their financial performance. Method: A content analysis methodology was adopted for the annual financial statements of a sample comprising (60 observations) from the banking sector, covering the period from 2013 to 2022. The Aql and Zahri (2020) scale were utilized to measure disclosure across three dimensions: (1) disclosure of digital banking channels and accessibility, (2) disclosure of digitalization risks and their management methods, and (3) disclosure of agreements with digital and financial technology companies. Data were statistically analyzed using the Multiple Linear Regression model, based on Pooled OLS and Random-effect Model techniques. Results: The findings revealed inconsistent accounting practices among Palestinian banks regarding the disclosure of the three digitalization indicators, despite a gradual improvement observed in the general disclosure level over the study years. Bank of Palestine registered the highest levels, highlighting its leadership in this domain. Conversely, the Palestine Islamic Bank and Al-Quds Bank showed lower levels in some aspects, while a general weakness in disclosure levels was noted at the Arab Islamic Bank and the Investment Bank. The results also indicated a positive impact of disclosure regarding digital banking channels and digitalization risks and their management on the financial performance of listed banks. In contrast, the impact of disclosing agreements with technology companies was relatively less significant. Recommendations: The study recommended that the Palestine Monetary Authority (PMA) establish a unified guiding framework defining the nature, content, and minimum requirements for digitalization indicator disclosures, and rules for standardizing practices. It also called for organizing joint technical and methodological workshops between the PMA and banks' boards of directors to train accountants and auditors on the standards for measuring and presenting these indicators. Recommendations included encouraging banks to enhance the level of detail and transparency in their disclosures to reduce information asymmetry and boost depositor and investor confidence, thereby positively reflecting on performance and banking reputation. This includes directing special intervention efforts towards the Arab Islamic Bank and the Investment Bank to address the notable weaknesses in their disclosure practices during the study period. Conclusion: The study concludes that digital disclosure in the Palestinian banking sector has evolved from a mere regulatory formality into a strategic tool for enhancing market trust and competitive advantage. Therefore, banks must shift from formal/quantitative disclosure to qualitative disclosure that highlights the economic feasibility of digital transformation. الهدف: سعت هذه الدراسة إلى استكشاف طبيعة ومستوى الافصاح المحاسبي عن مؤشرات الرقمنة لدى البنوك الفلسطينية المدرجة، وقياس مدى التباين في هذا الافصاح فيما بينها، فضلا عن تحديد أثره على أدائها المالي. المنهجية: تم اتباع منهج تحليل المحتوى للقوائم المالية السنوية لعينة بلغت (60 مشاهدة) من قطاع البنوك، خلال الفترة الزمنية الممتدة بين عامي 2013 و2022. واعتُمد مقياس عقل وزهري (2020) لقياس الافصاح عبر أبعاده الثلاثة: (1) الافصاح عن قنوات الخدمات المصرفية الرقمية وإمكانية الوصول إليها، (2) الافصاح عن مخاطر الرقمنة وأساليب إدارتها، و(3) الافصاح عن الاتفاقيات مع شركات التكنولوجيا الرقمية والمالية. وجرى تحليل البيانات إحصائياً بتطبيق نموذج الانحدار الخطي المتعدد (Multiple Linear Regression)، بالاستناد إلى تقنيتي (Pooled OLS) ونموذج التأثيرات العشوائية (Random-effect Model). النتائج: أظهرت النتائج عن عدم اتساق الممارسات المحاسبية بين البنوك الفلسطينية فيما يتصل بالافصاح عن مؤشرات الرقمنة الثلاثة، رغم ملاحظة تحسنٍ تدريجيٍ في المستوى العام للافصاح خلال سنوات الدراسة. وسجّل بنك فلسطين المستويات الاعلى، مبرزاً ريادته في هذا المجال، بينما أظهر البنك الاسلامي الفلسطيني وبنك القدس مستويات أدنى في بعض الجوانب، في حين لُوحظ ضعفٌ عامٌ في مستويات الافصاح لدى البنك الاسلامي العربي وبنك الاستثمار. كما بيّنت النتائج وجود أثر إيجابي للافصاح عن قنوات الخدمات المصرفية الرقمية وعن مخاطر الرقمنة وأساليب إدارتها على الاداء المالي للبنوك المدرجة؛ وفي المقابل، كان تأثير الافصاح عن الاتفاقيات مع شركات التكنولوجيا أقل أهمية نسبياً. التوصيات: أوصت الدراسة بضرورة قيام سلطة النقد الفلسطينية بوضع إطار إرشادي موحّد يحدد طبيعة ومضمون والحد الادنى لافصاحات مؤشرات الرقمنة وقواعد توحيد الممارسات. كما دعت إلى تنظيم ورش عمل تقنية ومنهجية مشتركة بين السلطة ومجالس إدارات البنوك لتدريب المحاسبين والمراجعين على معايير قياس وعرض هذه المؤشرات. وشملت التوصيات تشجيع البنوك على تعزيز مستوى التفصيل والشفافية في إفصاحاتها، بغية الحدّ من عدم تماثل المعلومات وتعزيز ثقة المودعين والمستثمرين، بما ينعكس إيجاباً على الاداء والسمعة المصرفية؛ مع توجيه جهود تدخلية خاصة نحو البنك الاسلامي العربي وبنك الاستثمار لمعالجة الضعف الملحوظ في ممارسات الافصاح لديهما خلال فترة الدراسة. الخاتمة: تخلص الدراسة إلى أن الإفصاح عن الرقمنة في القطاع المصرفي الفلسطيني لم يعد مجرد إجراء تنظيمي، بل أصبح أداة استراتيجية لتعزيز الثقة والميزة التنافسية؛ مما يستوجب الانتقال من الإفصاح الكمي الشكلي إلى الإفصاح النوعي الذي يبرز الجدوى الاقتصادية للتحول الرقمي.
