Abstract: The resurgence of student protests against Israel's military actions in Gaza has been met with a new wave of McCarthyism, targeting dissent, academic freedom, and free speech on university campuses. This essay examines the broader political context in which universities, under pressure from pro-Israel donors and far-right politicians, have increasingly suppressed student activism through administrative crackdowns, police violence, and public shaming. Drawing on historical parallels, including Cold War-era McCarthyism and authoritarian attacks on higher education, the article highlights how student activists are being criminalized for advocating divestment and speaking out against the war. The assault on critical education is part of a larger reactionary movement to eliminate discussions of systemic injustice and weaken democratic institutions. Ultimately, the protests represent a crucial moment of civic resistance, exposing both the complicity of universities in state violence and the urgent need to defend higher education as a public good.
