Mutation of active site glutamate in serine hydroxymethyltransferase allows trapping a reactive intermediate: a combined neutron and X-ray crystallography study

Neutron crystallography visualized hydrogen atoms and protonation states in Tth SHMT E53Q enzyme. The mutation permitted trapping an intermediate with l -Ser and THF substrates that demonstrates structural preorganization for the next catalytic step.
