The evolution of thought during the last 25 years on the mechanism of pitting corrosion of copper in supply waters is traced and the significance of early observations reconsldered m the light of recent knowledge. A simplified approach to the Membrane Cell Theory, the role of surface films in the initiation mechanism and methods of prevention and protection are included.
