Life cycle assessment reveals transportation emissions dominate an electric tool rental service, indicating depot location is critical for product-service system sustainability.

Key Points

Evaluate the environmental impacts of a use-oriented electric tool rental service compared to conventional product sales to identify critical processes for sustainability optimization.
Conducted a life cycle assessment on the annual service of one electric chainsaw within Husqvarna's 'Tools for you' rental model compared with conventional sales.
Evaluated environmental impacts across manufacturing, accessories, infrastructure, waste management, use phase, and customer transportation.
Assessed sensitivity across variables including product lifetime, data choices, transport assumptions, and maintenance intervals.
Customer transportation to rental depots generated the dominant environmental impact, overshadowing the life cycle benefits gained from reduced product manufacturing, infrastructure, and waste.
System sustainability was heavily sensitive to depot locations, product lifespan, maintenance schedules, and user transport behavior.
