TransAF deep learning model improves postoperative AF prediction sensitivity by up to ~46% over standard methods.
Why the study?
Postoperative atrial fibrillation is the most common complication after cardiac surgery and predicting its onset remains challenging, motivating development of an accurate and explainable predictive model.
Does TransAF improve the prediction of postoperative atrial fibrillation in patients undergoing cardiac surgery compared to baseline predictive models?
Does TransAF improve the prediction of postoperative atrial fibrillation in patients undergoing cardiac surgery compared to baseline predictive models?
TransAF, an explainable transformer-powered deep learning system, improved the prediction of postoperative atrial fibrillation compared to baseline models while providing feature interaction analysis.

Kaur et al. (2026) conducted a letter in Postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) (n=2,068). TransAF deep learning system vs. Baseline predictive models (SVM, RF, GBDT, FCNN, ResNet) was evaluated on Prediction performance (sensitivity, F1, and AUROC). The TransAF deep learning system outperformed state-of-the-art predictive methods for postoperative atrial fibrillation with up to 46% and 15% improvements in sensitivity and F1 scores, respectively.
