Essay examines the transition between psychoanalysis paradigms, suggesting a creative developmental shift in clinical practice.
Psychoanalysis straddles at least two domains: the clinical and the applied. This essay will focus on the clinical domain with specific examination of the rejection of the old classical paradigm and the creation of the current relational model. This shift has been one of the most creative developments in the field for some time. It is simplistic to think of these two paradigms in either-or terms, but due to space limitations what follows is a sketch of the issues.
