Prospective single-center analysis of 95 patients (56 men and 39 women; mean age 65 years) presenting with echocardiographic diagnosis or detection of cardiac tumors from 1999 to 2014.
Surgical resection with histopathological evaluation was performed in 41 of 61 patients with primary tumors, with a median follow-up of 43 months (range 0.5–183 months).
Primary cardiac tumors occurred in 64% (61/95) of patients and metastatic tumors in 36% (34/95), with primary lesions most frequently situated in the left atrium (35%) and right atrium (25%).
Histopathology of 41 resected primary tumors identified benign neoplasms in 73% (30/41; predominantly myxoma [67%] and papillary fibroelastoma [23%]), malignant tumors in 24% (10/41; including 6 angiosarcomas, 3 lymphomas, and 1 leiomyosarcoma), and thrombus in 2% (1/41).
Echocardiography yielded an overall diagnostic accuracy of 80%; survival was 100% (30/30) among patients with benign tumors compared to a 70% mortality rate (7/10) in malignant tumors (p < 0.0001).
