Purpose This research paper aims to explore the role of entrepreneurial orientation (EO) and networking capability (NC) in determining export performance (EP) between companies in the Jordanian energy industry, and the role of energy sector competitiveness (ESC) as a facilitating environment that directs capabilities in enabling them to achieve measurable export performance. Design/methodology/approach To analyze energy companies, the authors use a cross-sectional survey of renewable energy, EPC/Operations and Maintenance and industrial energy efficiency companies. The tests on the EO, NC, ESC and EP relationships are conducted using variance-based structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) with standard reliability, validity and mediation checks. Findings The analysis shows a positive correlation between EO and EP. NC operates through a dual mechanism: not only does it have a positive effect on EP, but it also shares some of the EO effect, resulting in statistically significant mediation. There is a positive relationship between NC and ESC. Combined, this suggests that a more competitive sectoral environment, characterized by predictable network services, a more precise set of standards and reduced coordination costs, would enable firms to convert capability endowments into actual export contracts. Research limitations/implications The cross-sectional design does not permit causal inference; future studies might use longitudinal data and could help in triangulating it with administrative/contract data. Practical implications Scale EP can be achieved by codifying procurement-grade competencies and publishing service-level guarantees for network access and permitting, as well as maintaining cross-border matchmaking as professionalization of alliances advances. Originality/value This study unites the ability theory and practical decisions affecting sector performance, by anticipating the energy industry and relating company potential to sector-administration demands (e.g. export-preparedness prerequisites, allowing and grid-is service predictability, tender-matching data systems and results-based funding).
