In this study, the methylene blue (MB + ) method reported by Robertson and Ward was modified in order to measure cation exchange capacity (CEC) and was found to be fairly simple and reproducible. To obtain reproducible results, the following factors in the measurement were evaluated: wavelength of spectrophotometer; dye adsorption by membrane filter; initial dye concentration and MB + adsorption on clays; concentration of clay; time of contact before filtration; change of color intensity of dye with pH; and, fading of MB + color with time.
