Develops a theory connecting spectral flow to J-eta invariant in Kreĭn spaces, indicating broader mathematical implications.
We develop a self-contained theory of J-Fredholm operators on Kreĭn spaces and prove an Atiyah-Patodi-Singer (APS) type formula relating spectral flow to the variation of the J-eta invariant. The J-eta invariant eta_J(A) is defined via a resolvent integral that converges unconditionally for operators of spectral dimension one, bypassing the heat-kernel methods that require positivity. Our main result is: for a differentiable path {A_t} of J-self-adjoint operators satisfying eleven natural hypotheses, SF_J(A_t) = (1/2)(eta_J(A_0) - eta_J(A_1)). As a principal application, we verify that the Eisenstein scattering family A_t = JM_t on the spectral line of Gamma satisfies all eleven hypotheses unconditionally, the J-Fredholm condition following from the Prime Number Theorem alone. The APS formula therefore holds without assuming the Riemann Hypothesis. The vanishing condition SF_J(A_t) = 0 is shown to be equivalent to four further analytic conditions on the scattering determinant and the J-eta invariant.
