The development of cutting edge technology has typically outpaced the resources K-12 schools have to make use of them. The cost of implementation, along with the training educators need to successfully integrate new technologies, can be prohibitive and just two of the reasons schools are slow to change. In the case of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning, in addition to traditional resource handicaps, an emphasis on the possible negative consequences of their use has created barriers to adoption. Pop culture portrayals of AI as world ending, along with the opportunities that exist to access it for less than honest motives, has fueled debate over the role AI should play in primary and secondary schools. This may detract from the already profound impact integrated AI and machine learning is having on the modern world. This presentation will examine the varying approaches taken to AI across the K-12 landscape. It will assist post-secondary stakeholders in evaluating the actions that can be taken to address recruits with diverse levels of experience using AI and machine learning.
