Reports the isolation of trigonelline from Tapinanthus bangwensis, indicating its potential antioxidant properties.
The present study focuses on the isolation and structural determination of Trigonelline, a compound with multiple biological properties, from Tapinanthus bangwensis leaves. The isolation and purification of this compound from the crude ethanolic extract of the plant's leaves were carried out by combining silica gel column chromatography and Sephadex® LH-20. The elucidation of the structure of Trigonelline, isolated for the first time from the plant, was made possible by the analysis of one- and two-dimensional 1H and 13C NMR spectra, IR and mass spectrometry. The evaluation of antioxidant activity by the DPPH method of the ethanol, ethyl acetate, and hexane extracts showed that the hexane extract was the most active (IC50 = 8.33 µg/mL). Furthermore, phytochemical screening of the different extracts using color and precipitation reactions revealed the presence of leucoanthocyanins, saponins, and sterols and terpenes in all extracts.
