Narrative explores diabetes management challenges in Latinx individuals, highlighting systemic implications.
After ten years of life with a chronic illness, I have been forced to rethink ideas of traditional illness narratives and the relationship between Latinx people and diabetes. Over a decade after my diagnosis with type 2 diabetes, my blood sugar remains uncontrolled, still as high, sometimes, as when I was first diagnosed. Such a future was not what my doctor had planned for me. Shortly after telling me that I was diabetic, he told me that, if I worked hard enough, I could achieve remission, meaning I could control my illness without medication. Ironically, my diabetes is uncontrolled now because I am without medication due to the popularity of my particular regimen, Ozempic. This is what it means to have chronic illness under capitalism.
