Investigates the effect of reverse burnishing on residual stress in surface layers, indicating its impact on hardness.
Finite-element modeling of reverse burnishing is used to determine the tensor components and residual stress as a function of the hardening parameters. The influence of the reverse burnishing parameters on the hardness and the depth of the hardened (surface) layer is established. A correlation is found between the maximum component of the compressive residual stress, its depth, the maximum hardness, and the depth of the hardened layer. The influence of the residual stress on the hardness of the hardened layer is studied.
