Abstract In the following work, the influence of active strand cooling on the process efficiency, strand geometry and resulting bonding strength in the Large Scale Additive Manufacturing (LSAM) process is investigated experimentally. Based on layer adhesion and strand homogeneity, a process window for the application of active strand cooling for the processing of polycarbonate (PC) / acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) blends is derived. Different intensities of compressed air cooling in combination with different cooling times are investigated, to draw conclusions on the occurring bonding strength from the resulting temperature-time history. The purpose is to avoid heat accumulations and resulting deformations, especially for small geometries with low layer times, while achieving consistent bonding strength. During the tests, the processing time for a thin-walled cuboid was improved by a factor of 3.
