Purpose The purpose of this study is to understand the influence of individual conservation values on the social desirability of non-sanctioned political tactics among employees. The study also focuses on understanding how conservation values interact with self-determination motivation and organisational tenure, and the interaction effect on social desirability of non-sanctioned political tactics. Design/methodology/approach For this study, the authors collected survey data (n = 356) from a public sector organisation in India. The quantitative technique of partial least squares-structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) is used to conduct the analysis. Findings The results highlight the negative relationship between conservation values and social desirability of non-sanctioned political tactics. Furthermore, the moderation analysis shows that the negative relationship between the independent and dependent variables increases in the presence of the moderator variables of self-determination and organisational tenure. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is one of the first studies to examine how an employee’s individual values affect their attitude towards non-sanctioned political tactics. Organisations can leverage this to improve talent recruitment, development and culture building. The study also contributes to organisational psychology literature by exploring self-determination and organisational tenure as boundary conditions of this relationship.
