Review examines morphofunctional concept for stent/balloon interaction with coronary arteries, indicating its importance for device development.
Highlights The review delves into the proposed concept of the morphofunctional arterial conduit system used in open heart surgery. Based on this concept, the review presents analogous morphofunctional stent/balloon-artery system for endovascular treatment of coronary artery disease. Abstract The review article describes potential modeling of the interaction between a stent/balloon and a coronary artery analogous to and based on the previously proposed concept of the morphofunctional arterial conduit system. The system substantiates the advantages and disadvantages of various techniques of coronary artery bypass grafting and should be accounted for when choosing a stent. This interaction during endovascular treatment of coronary artery disease is of great importance for the development of new generation of devices, as well as for the management of various factors involved in the prevention of stent dysfunction and progression of coronary atherosclerosis.
