This article examines the assessment of the stability of road embankments, taking into account their stress-strain state. Based on Mohr–Coulomb strength theory and the results of numerical modelling, a criterion for the relative strength of subgrade soils is proposed. An analysis of the stress state of a reference embankment has been carried out, and the distribution of critical zones within its cross-section has been determined. The possibility of using the proposed indicator for the comparative assessment of the stability of embankments with different geometries and for identifying potential slip surfaces has been demonstrated
