Simulation study demonstrates processing time differences among angle-of-arrival algorithms for concentric rim arrays, highlighting trade-offs for next-generation beamforming.
Next-generation communications, including Beyond 5G (B5G) and 6G, require massive array antenna and the beamforming technology that utilizes them. The Angle-of-Arrival (AOA) information estimated through the array antenna-based AOA estimation algorithm can be applied to various beamforming technologies such as position estimation and interference cancellation. Although the accuracy of the AOA estimation is improved employing a massive array antenna, the large number of antenna elements installed on it causes the spatial constraint and the high implementation cost. In order to mitigate these drawbacks, Concentric Rim Array (CRA) antennas have been developed, and various AOA estimation algorithms have been proposed. Since, however, the comprehensive mathematical analysis remains insufficient, this paper provides mathematical models for AOA estimation algorithms applicable to the CRA antenna and compares their computational complexities. Through computer simulations, the computational complexity of each algorithm is compared and analyzed to evaluate its processing time performance.
